I work in the University Communications Department and I hope to share some of our exciting Uni-birthday-party plans with you! 😉

The university has planned a (very) full program to celebrate its 180th Anniversary! The ceremonies are planned to take place parallel to a few events that take place every year but also along with a very special international consortium.

First a really quick history lesson! Why are we celebrating the TU’s Anniversary now? On May 2nd, 1836, the “Königliche Gewerbschule zu Chemnitz” was founded on the premises of the local grammar school at the time. This was the very first in a long line of institutions which would later evolve into the TU we know and love today. 180 years later, we are celebrating our university’s birthday!

The celebrations will last a full week and they officially began on Thursday, April 28th with the Girls’ Day: a day just for female high school students, where they can get to know the university and the opportunities that are available to them through university studies or vocational trainings.

The celebrations continue Saturday, April 30th with the Spring-Gala. This year, the annual event will be held in the beautiful State Museum for Archaeology in Chemnitz (smac for short) where award-winners and other commendable achievements from Uni members over the last year will be presented. Also interesting to note: the smac will host a special exhibition with important innovations that have a connection to the TU – you can visit this “Sonderausstellung” there in the museum until May 21st.

The Spring-Gala will also serve as the official opening for the AC21 International Forum.  AC21 stands for “Academic Consortium for the 21st Century”, and it is a network that has members all over the world. They hold International Forums every two years, and since the TU is a founding member, we have the honor of hosting the event this year. Guests will attend lectures and discussions and also have a chance to get to know Chemnitz while they are here by means of a planned cultural program. The Forum will be held from the 28th of April through the 3rd of May.

On Monday (today), guests are invited to attend the official Anniversary Ceremony at 9:00 a.m. in the main auditorium in the Central Lecture Hall Building. University representatives and special guests from the region and from abroad will address the audience. Afterwards, there will be a champagne and cake reception in the foyer. You can register at https://www.tu-chemnitz.de/uk/veranstaltungen/events/festwoche/anmeldung/index.php if you want to attend this ceremony!

The highlight of Tuesday is definitely the Campus- and Sportfest! Stop by the on-campus event from 1:00 p.m. through 7:00 p.m. (next to and behind the Mensa on Reichenhainer Straße) and you can take part in or watch some very interesting competitions, like human table soccer or goal-shooting with speed measurement. There will also be musical and dance performances on the stage, and awards from the team competitions will be presented on the stage at 6:00 p.m. as well.

Afterwards, don’t forget the Mensa party! The theme is “180-Minute-Party” and doors open at 11:00 p.m. The Party is officially kicked off at midnight on Wednesday, make sure you get your tickets ahead of time in Buchhandlung Universitas or in Bar Ausgleich!

Here is a really helpful graphic (only in German) to give you an overview of the week’s festivities: https://www.tu-chemnitz.de/uk/veranstaltungen/events/festwoche/index.html
