Progress in environmentally friendly lubricants

Exciting findings in the field of environmentally friendly lubricants have been obtained as part of a current thesis. Lubricants are ubiquitous in mechanical engineering, but both production and disposal are unfortunately rarely environmentally friendly. In the above-mentioned thesis, the composition and suitability of biological lubricants based on screw slime were investigated. Under simplified assumptions, it was possible to demonstrate a friction-reducing property, even though with a significantly lower viscosity than that of mineral oil. In principle, the effort required for extraction and the properties that still need to be optimized suggest synthetic production of the main components of the screw slime. However, the results confirm the approach and offer potential for research work based on it.
