Free and permanent access to reliable research results accelerates, among others, finding effective measures against pandemics and global threats to the environment and health.

Since this year, research institutions, Open Access projects and publishers have increasingly been initiating collections of openly available publications on COVID-19. It is the task of the libraries to establish central and long-term access to trustworthy archives. Two prominent examples are the Informationsplattform Open Access and the ZB MED COVID-19 Hub.

To enable specialists from Chemnitz University of Technology in their field to publish quickly and easily, the University Library offers a variety of services for open access publishing. Since the publication cycle begins with the selection of a suitable publication medium, the consulting service starts with the examination of quality features of a journal, a conference, a publishing house or an online platform. Together with the authors, we find serious offers and check legal questions during the publication process. Publication costs and their negotiation play a significant role in the acquisition processes in the library.

The selection of an Open Access option should not result in a financial burden for the authors.
That is why a publication fund has been available for many years now, to finance Open Access articles for members of the University. Library staff can provide information about the funding requirements online, by telephone or by e-mail.

The University Library has for a long time been negotiating agreements with some publishers to reduce publication costs, e.g. Frontiers and MDPI AG. You are welcome to inform us about your favorite relevant publishers so that we can look into negotiating future contracts.

As part of the nationwide DEAL agreement, contracts have been signed with the publishers Springer and Wiley, which include a free publish and read component for the authors of Chemnitz University of Technology. All articles are freely available to readers and may be used within the scope of the Open Access license granted. The costs for publishing are covered by the University Library during the contract period. Further negotiations take place within consortia or in individual license negotiations with publishers in order to establish Open Access as a standard.

The publication system MONARCH-Qucosa can be used as a free infrastructure for first and second publications, especially for post- and preprints. In addition, we would be pleased to provide you with information on relevant repositories and data repositories.

The publication service of the University Library also includes training courses on the publication of dissertations and on the use of Open Access licenses. These modules are designed as a complete package for your successful publication project:

  • Consultation/Training,
  • Financing and
  • Publication according to international standards
