Security initiative: Kerberos authentication in the campus network

The Kerberos protocol is used to authenticate central network services on campus. Authentication against Kerberos can take place on PC workstations during login or in a user session. The Kerberos ticket obtained in this way enables passwordless access to services such as e-mail, web authentication (Web Trust Center), AFS storage services and secure shell connections to compute servers and acts as a single sign-on.

As part of the increase in IT security, authentication using Kerberos will only be supported within the campus network from April 4, 2023.

A VPN connection must be set up to use central IT services with authentication based on Kerberos from the Internet. Changes to the configuration of the clients are not necessary.
